Ramesh Singh, a 52-year-old farmer from Chamoli district, was skeptical when our team first approached him about organic farming. "I had been using chemical fertilizers for 20 years," he recalls. "My father farmed organically, but I thought modern methods were better. I was wrong." His 2-hectare farm was showing signs of soil degradation: decreasing yields despite increased fertilizer use, higher pest problems requiring more pesticides, rising input costs eating into profits, and water retention problems in soil. The transformation took three years: Year 1: Soil Rehabilitation - Stopped chemical inputs gradually, introduced organic compost and cow dung, planted nitrogen-fixing legumes, installed rainwater harvesting system. Year 2: Crop Diversification - Introduced intercropping with pulses, started kitchen garden with vegetables, began vermicomposting production, planted fruit trees on field boundaries. Year 3: Market Integration - Obtained organic certification, connected with organic food retailers, started direct sales to urban consumers, began value-addition with processing. The results have been remarkable: 40% increase in net income despite lower yields initially, premium prices for organic produce (30-50% higher), reduced input costs by 60%, additional income from vermicompost sales. "Organic farming is not just about avoiding chemicals," explains Ramesh Singh, now a master trainer. "It's about working with nature, not against it. It's about leaving better soil for our children than what we inherited." His success inspired 15 neighboring farmers to transition to organic farming, and they formed a farmer producer organization (FPO) for collective bargaining and shared resources.
